Fitness without streaks

Measure the week. Ignore the day.

Streaks were invented to keep you opening an app. They are very good at that. They are bad at keeping you strong, because the first thing a streak teaches you is that one missed day undoes everything.

What a streak actually does

It makes every day binary: a tick or a gap. It counts the gap as a failure whatever caused it, so a sick child, a red-eye flight and pure laziness all look identical. It quietly pushes you toward more, because the only way to protect a streak is to train on days you should not. And when it finally breaks, as every streak does, it takes the habit with it, because the number you were protecting is gone and the number was the point.

None of this has anything to do with getting stronger. Strength does not know what day it is.

What BANKED measures instead

A bad month, worked through

Four ordinary weeks with real life in them.
WeekWhat happenedSessionsStreak appBANKED
1NormalMon A, Thu BDay 14 → 212/2. Banked.
2Away Tuesday to FridaySat A onlyStreak broken. Start again at 1.1/2. In progress, then the week ends. Nothing owed.
3Back to normalTue B, Fri ADay 4 → 82/2. Banked. Same weights as week 1.
4Everyone illSun A, 20 minDay 91/2. Fine. Next Monday is 0/2 and that is the design.

Three banked weeks out of four, with a travel week and an illness in the middle. The streak app reports a failure and a fresh start. BANKED reports a decent month, because it was one.

What replaces the nudge

People worry that without a streak there is nothing pulling them back. There are two things, and both are quieter.

Why this is not the soft option

It would be easy to read “no streaks” as “no standards”. The standard is precise: two proper strength sessions, every week, with weights that go up when they should. It is simply enforced at the level where it makes sense. A week is long enough to absorb a bad day and short enough to notice a bad habit. A day is neither.

Fair questions

Don’t I need accountability?
You need a standard you can meet in a normal week and a clear signal when you have met it. Two sessions and “week banked” is both. Accountability to a number that punishes flu is not accountability, it is a slot machine.
Without a streak, won’t I just do nothing?
Some weeks, possibly. Those weeks happen on streak apps too; you just feel worse about them and delete the app. BANKED makes the next week cheap to start: open it, do Session A, 1/2. The lack of debt is what brings people back.
What about motivation?
The honest answer is that motivation is unreliable and programmes that depend on it fail. BANKED depends on the session being short enough to do when you are not motivated, and on the week being forgiving enough that you do not have to be motivated every day.
Can I turn on some kind of reminder?
Not yet, and if we add one it will be one nudge on a day you choose, not an escalating campaign. Nothing in BANKED will ever tell you that you are about to lose something.

Two sessions banked. Then the app shuts up.

No streaks, no badges, no debt. Just the next useful session and a clear “done” when the week is done. Free.
