Home workouts for people who dislike home workouts

If home workouts feel like nothing happened, that is not a character flaw. It is a design flaw, and it has five parts. Here they are, with the fixes.

Why they feel like nothing

  1. No boundary. A gym has a door, a bag and a journey; the session has a start and an end. The living room has a sofa in it and the session bleeds into the evening.
  2. Follow-along fatigue. A video does the thinking for you and then forgets you existed. Tomorrow’s video is different, so nothing accumulates and nothing gets easier.
  3. No progression. Without weights or a ladder, the twentieth push-up session is the first push-up session. Boredom is the body reporting that nothing is changing.
  4. No number. In a gym there is a weight on the bar. At home there is a feeling, and feelings are bad at telling you whether you are getting stronger.
  5. Wrong scale. Home workouts get sold as “just ten minutes” and then feel like ten minutes: not quite worth changing clothes for.
A home workout stops feeling like nothing the moment something in it can go up.

Five fixes

  • A fixed place. One rectangle of floor that is where sessions happen. Move the coffee table once; do not move it back.
  • A fixed session. Session A or B, the same shape every time, so you can tell you are getting better at it. Variety is the enemy here.
  • A visible number. A weight per hand, or a rung on a ladder: “push-up, level 2 of 5”. BANKED shows both and shows what you did last time.
  • A hard stop. Twenty, thirty or forty-five minutes, chosen before you start, with a timer for rests. When it ends, it ends. The sofa is a reward, not a threat.
  • A door handle. The missing movement in most home workouts is the pull. A towel round a closed door handle fixes it for nothing.

A 30-minute home session, in full

Session A for someone with some experience, a pair of dumbbells to 20 kg, and nothing else.

Session A · home · 30 minutes

≈ 30 min · dumbbells
  1. Goblet squat · 3 × 8–12 · ≈ 12 kg
  2. Dumbbell floor press · 3 × 8–12 · ≈ 12 kg per hand (paired with the squat)
  3. Dumbbell row · 3 × 8–12 a side · ≈ 12 kg
  4. Dumbbell Romanian deadlift · 2 × 8–12 · ≈ 14 kg per hand (paired with the row)
  5. Plank · 2 × 30–60 seconds

Three-minute warm-up. Rest 60 seconds; pairs alternate and share the rest. When every set hits 12, the next session says 14 kg. That sentence is the whole fix.

Furniture as kit

For the version with nothing at all, the house is the equipment.

What a pair of dumbbells changes

Everything on the squat, hinge, press and row becomes loadable, and loading progresses in 2 kg steps instead of ladder jumps. That is smoother, more visible and more motivating, and it is the one purchase that makes home training feel like training. Adjustable ones to 20 or 24 kg per hand cover most people for years.

Fair questions

I have no space.
The session needs a body length of floor and a wall or door. If the rectangle exists for yoga it exists for this. Dumbbells live under a bed.
I get interrupted by children, partners, deliveries.
Pause. BANKED’s rest timer does not care and the session does not expire. A 30-minute session that takes 50 minutes with a nappy change in the middle is still Session A, still logged, still banked.
I miss the atmosphere of a gym.
Fair, and nothing here replaces it. Some people do both: the two BANKED sessions as the floor at home, and a gym visit when the week allows, as a bonus. The floor is what survives when the gym does not happen.

Make the living room count.

BANKED gives the home session a shape, a number and a hard stop, then moves the number up. Free.
