The Tuesday rule
Never plan a session for a specific day. Plan two for the week, and take the first two days that offer twenty minutes.
That is the whole rule. It sounds like a downgrade from a proper schedule and it is the opposite: a schedule with days in it breaks the first time a day breaks, and a week with two sessions in it does not. The week is long enough to absorb a late call, a cancelled train and a Thursday that ate itself, and short enough that you notice if you are drifting.
BANKED is built on it. There is no calendar and no “Monday: legs”. There is a week, a count of two, and the next useful session whenever you open the app.
Three decisions, three timescales
On the day
The day
- The slot you had in mind has gone. Right now, what exists?
- 45 minutes
- The full session. Enjoy it; they are rare.
- 30 minutes
- The standard session. Most weeks this is the one.
- 20 minutes
- The essentials: squat, push, pull, core, two sets, short rests. Banks in full.
- Less than 20
- Nothing today. Not a five-minute “something”; that teaches you sessions are negotiable. The week has other days.
- 45 minutes
In the week
The week
- It is Thursday. Where is the week?
- 2/2
- Done. Anything else is a bonus and BANKED will say so. Go home.
- 1/2
- One more, any day through Sunday, any duration. Twenty minutes on Sunday evening is a banked week.
- 0/2
- Are there two days left that could each hold twenty minutes?
- Yes
- Then the week is still bankable: A on one, B on the other, back to back if needed.
- No
- Take one if you can. One is not banked and is not nothing. Next week starts clean.
- Yes
- Are there two days left that could each hold twenty minutes?
- 2/2
Across the month
The month
- Look back at four weeks. How many banked?
- 3 or 4
- The system is working. Weights are climbing. Change nothing.
- 2
- Normal for a hard month. Check whether the unbanked weeks were 1/2 or 0/2; ones mean the habit is fine and the diary was not.
- 0 or 1
- The problem is upstream of training. Is twenty minutes really unavailable, or is the session in your head still an hour at a gym? Set the default to 20 minutes at home for a month and see.
- 3 or 4
Three chaotic weeks, worked through
- Mon Session A · 30 min Home, before anything could go wrong
- Tue Late
- Wed Later
- Thu Launch
- Fri Recovery drinks
- Sat Nothing planned
- Sun Session B · 20 min Home, bodyweight, 6 pm
Monday early because the week was known to be bad. Sunday at twenty minutes because that is what was left. Banked.
- Mon Fly out
- Tue Session A · 20 min Hotel room, travel mode
- Wed Trip extended
- Thu Session B · 20 min Same hotel, same towel
- Fri Fly home
- Sat Nothing planned
- Sun Nothing planned
Two twenty-minute hotel sessions. Nothing weighed more than a towel. Banked, and the weights at home are exactly where they were.
- Mon Session A · 30 min Home
- Tue Escalation
- Wed Escalation
- Thu Escalation
- Fri Escalation
- Sat Slept
- Sun Family
1/2. Not banked. Also not a disaster: the month is two banked weeks out of three so far, and Monday starts at 0/2 with no debt attached. Session B is simply next.
What to set up so the rule works
- A default of 20 minutes at home. Not because you will always use it, but because the decision on a bad day has to be pre-made.
- Kit in the room where you would actually do it. Dumbbells under the desk beat dumbbells in the garage.
- Travel mode, not a travel plan. One tap when you start the session; the exercises assume an empty room.
- No streak anywhere. If another app is counting your days, it is working against the rule. Turn it off or ignore it.
Fair questions
- Should I train early to protect the slot?
- If mornings are reliably yours, yes: an early session is one that work cannot cancel. If mornings are the first thing work takes, do not build the plan on them. The Tuesday rule works either way because it does not care which slot you use.
- What about weeks with genuinely zero time?
- They exist and they are zero. The next week starts at zero too, not at minus two. Over a year the zero weeks are fewer than they feel, and the system is designed to survive them rather than pretend they will not happen.
- Isn’t “any two days” just an excuse to drift to Sunday?
- Sometimes. A banked week on Saturday and Sunday is still a banked week, and the weights still went up. If every week drifts to the weekend, that is information about your weekdays, not a failure of the rule.
